Claude AI Introduces Big Token Limit for Longer, Smarter Prompts

Anthropic has announced a major update to its Claude Sonnet 4 AI model, introducing a big token limit that significantly boosts its capabilities for enterprise and developer use. Now, Claude can handle up to 1 million tokens in a single prompt — equivalent to roughly 750,000 words or 75,000 lines of code. This is about five times its previous 200,000-token limit and more than double the 400,000 tokens offered by OpenAI’s GPT-5.

The update is available for Anthropic API users, as well as through Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. Importantly, the big token limit enables Claude to process entire projects at once, making it more efficient for long coding tasks, app development, and other large-scale AI applications.

According to Brad Abrams, Anthropic’s product lead for the Claude platform, the extended context window is especially beneficial for AI coding platforms, where the model needs to “remember” all previous steps during long-running tasks. This enhancement is expected to improve performance in scenarios like autonomous coding agents, feature development, and debugging large codebases.

Competing with GPT-5 and Others

While GPT-5 has been making waves with competitive pricing and strong coding performance, Claude remains a favorite among developers on platforms like GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Cursor. However, with big names like Google offering 2 million tokens in Gemini 2.5 Pro and Meta pushing 10 million tokens in Llama 4 Scout, Anthropic is focusing on not just increasing token capacity, but making its “effective token limit” more meaningful — ensuring Claude can truly understand and use most of the provided context.

Pricing Changes for Larger Prompts

For prompts exceeding 200,000 tokens, Anthropic has introduced new pricing: $6 per million input tokens and $22.50 per million output tokens, compared to the standard $3 and $15 rates for smaller prompts.
