August 12, 2025The market for AI companion applications — platforms where users interact with virtual personalities — is experiencing rapid growth in 2025. New industry data reveals that of the 337 active and revenue-generating AI companion apps available worldwide, 128 were released this year alone.
This niche segment of the AI market has already generated $82 million in consumer spending during the first half of 2025 and is on track to exceed $120 million by year’s end.

Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots, AI companion apps focus on personalized, human-like interactions. They allow users to connect with custom characters — from virtual friends and romantic partners to fantasy personas and anime-inspired companions. These characters can be either pre-designed or user-created, offering unique personalities and conversational styles.
Popular platforms in this space include Replika, Character.AI, PolyBuzz, Chai, and others. Collectively, AI companion apps have been downloaded over 220 million times worldwide. In the first half of 2025 alone, downloads surged 88% year-over-year, reaching 60 million.
Total lifetime consumer spending in the category has now reached $221 million globally, with revenue in 2025 up 64% compared to the same period in 2024. Notably, the top 10% of apps capture 89% of the market’s revenue, and 33 individual apps have surpassed $1 million in lifetime earnings.
Bigger tech companies are also entering the space. For example, xAI recently introduced AI companions, including anime-inspired characters and a 3D fox persona. Similarly, OpenAI’s recent GPT-5 release sparked discussions about the emotional connection users form with AI, prompting the temporary return of the previous 4o model in response to user sentiment.

Google has also tapped into the trend, hiring one of Character.AI’s co-founders last year, while the app itself continues to attract tens of millions of monthly active users.
Interestingly, the most popular AI companion apps are those catering to users seeking a virtual girlfriend. Of all active apps, 17% include “girlfriend” in their title, compared to 4% with “boyfriend” and even fewer mentioning “fantasy,” “anime,” or “lover.”
| Keyword in App Name | Number of Apps | Share of Total Apps |
|---|---|---|
| Girlfriend | 56 | 17% |
| Fantasy | 14 | 4% |
| Boyfriend | 13 | 4% |
| Anime | 11 | 3% |
| Soul | 10 | 3% |
| Soulmate | 7 | 2% |
| Lover | 6 | 2% |
| Waifu | 3 | 1% |
While hundreds of AI companion apps have launched since 2022, many have been removed due to low traction. However, the rising demand and market performance in 2025 suggest that AI companions are here to stay — with significant potential for further innovation and monetization.
