In a significant update to its AI strategy, Microsoft is currently testing a new virtual character called the “Copilot Appearance”, giving its popular AI assistant a friendly and animated face. This move is reminiscent of the nostalgic Clippy from the old Microsoft Office days, but with a major modern upgrade.
A Modern Take on an Old Idea
Remember Clippy — the paperclip that popped up in Word with unsolicited advice? While it was charming (and sometimes annoying), it marked Microsoft’s early attempt at humanizing software. Fast forward to 2025, and Microsoft is again stepping into the realm of personality-driven software with a dynamic face for Copilot, designed to make AI interactions more relatable and intuitive.

What Is the Copilot Appearance?
The new Microsoft Copilot appearance is described as a “small white cloud with a face” that reacts in real time to user inputs. It changes facial expressions to show emotions like curiosity, joy, surprise, or confusion — almost like you’re chatting with a humanized AI partner. Its shape can even shift into a heart or other forms based on the tone of conversation.
This character is still in experimental stages and currently being tested through Copilot Labs with a limited number of users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. It’s only available in English for now.
Emotionally Intelligent AI: Why It Matters
Adding expressions and memory to AI is not just a gimmick. Microsoft’s AI Chief, Mustafa Suleyman, states that this virtual face helps make AI more personal, trustworthy, and easier to engage with. The assistant is being designed to remember previous interactions and tailor responses accordingly.

Unlike Clippy, which often interrupted workflows, this new AI avatar is meant to blend into conversations, assisting you more naturally while offering an identity to the otherwise faceless assistant.
