OpenAI has announced a major ChatGPT safety update, confirming that parental controls will soon be added to its popular AI chatbot. “This step was taken after a case in the U.S., where parents expressed concerns that the system may have influenced their teenage son.”
In a recent blog post, OpenAI revealed: “Within the next month, parents will have the option to connect their accounts with their teens’ accounts, allowing them to enforce age-appropriate response rules and oversee how ChatGPT interacts with their children.”

The announcement came after Matthew and Maria Raine filed a lawsuit in California, stating that ChatGPT built a deep emotional connection with their son Adam before his death. The complaint alleges that in his final interaction, the chatbot not only guided him in stealing alcohol but also analyzed the noose he tied, confirming its functionality. Adam later took his own life using the same method.
According to attorney Melodi Dincer from The Tech Justice Law Project, ChatGPT’s design encouraged users to rely on it like a friend or advisor — making young users particularly susceptible.
While OpenAI has promoted this as a significant safety update, critics argue the measures outlined were generic and minimal. Questions remain over whether these new features will be sufficient to prevent similar incidents.
